PLANADVISER: What motivates you to stay in the retirement/advisory industry?

Duffy: What continues to motivate me is knowing that the work we do has a genuine impact on people’s lives. This industry isn’t just about numbers—it’s giving people the tools and resources so they have knowledge and confidence to make decisions for their retirement. The industry itself continues to evolve through changing legislation, economic conditions and innovation. There is always something new to learn, which keeps me engaged and eager to help my clients. I enjoy building relationships and trust with my clients and their employees as they navigate significant decisions that will impact their future. Each conversation is an opportunity to simplify complex issues, provide clarity and increase awareness of the importance to save for retirement.

PLANADVISER: What advice would you give to someone entering the industry today?

Duffy: My advice to someone entering the retirement plan industry today is to be prudent, to never stop learning and to listen. Acting with integrity and exercising sound judgment are foundational for a successful career in this industry. Committing to continuous learning will elevate a leader’s vision and impact. Our industry is constantly evolving through changes in legislation, technology and client expectations, so staying informed and being adaptable will help you provide the best possible guidance for plan sponsors and participants. Listen, listen, listen—technical knowledge and industry expertise are essential, but the ability to listen, build trust and understand a client’s goals is what creates long-term relationships and meaningful outcomes.

PLANADVISER: What outside interests or experiences have influenced how you approach your career?

Duffy: One of the biggest influences on my career has been my relationship with my family. They keep me grounded and continually remind me of what people are ultimately planning and saving for—not just retirement, but the ability to spend meaningful time with the people who matter most. Being present and spending time with my family has reinforced the importance of balance, empathy and taking a long-term view. Those same principals shape how I work with clients. I also value giving back to my community and maintaining strong personal relationships. These experiences have strengthened my ability to listen, communicate with empathy and build lasting trust. Great things can be accomplished by the positive impact we have on the lives of others, and I strive to carry this over to every client interaction.
