2026 Excellence In Operations

Kim Smith

Senior Client Service Associate,
Northwestern Mutual – Summit Financial Group

PLANADVISER: How did you end up in the retirement advisory industry?

Smith: I began my career in the retirement industry at National City Bank, working in the institutional trust department as a junior administrator. Shortly after joining, I started training in 401(k) plan recordkeeping and compliance.

This was more than 34 years ago, when year-end compliance testing and reporting were completed manually using grid paper, rather than the automated systems available today. That early experience sparked my passion for reconciliation, data analysis and ensuring accuracy. Helping clients maintain compliant and well-managed retirement plans laid the foundation for a career dedicated to serving plan sponsors and participants.

PLANADVISER: In what ways do you influence business decisions or firm growth through your operational role?

Smith: I influence business decisions and firm growth through my thorough review and analysis of our clients’ retirement plans. By evaluating plan operations and compliance, I can identify clients who may not be meeting regulatory requirements related to their 401(k) plans. This analysis helps drive important business decisions, including working with plan vendors and clients to correct compliance issues or, when necessary, determining whether we should discontinue the relationship. Additionally, by helping improve plan administration and supporting positive participant experiences, I contribute to the overall success and effectiveness of clients’ retirement plans.

PLANADVISER: What motivates you and keeps you engaged in the retirement plan advisory industry?

Smith: I am motivated by the opportunity to help companies establish retirement plans that provide meaningful benefits to their employees. By assisting employers in implementing and servicing 401(k) plans, I play a role in helping employees prepare for a more secure financial future. Knowing that my work contributes to individuals’ long-term retirement readiness is both rewarding and fulfilling, and it is what keeps me engaged and passionate about the retirement plan advisory operations industry.
