Mariners Wealth Advisors Data Breach Affects Nearly 9,000 Customers

The security incident from last November did not impact financial or investment accounts, according to the Maine state attorney general’s office.

Mariner Wealth Advisors LLC, a retirement plan advisory and wealth management firm based in Overland Park, Kansas, reported a data breach from November 2025 that exposed personal information of 8,995 customers, according to a Monday filing with the Maine attorney general’s office.

According to the Maine filing, the data breach occurred on November 21, 2025, and was discovered on November 24. A “criminal third party” accessed three employees’ cloud applications and downloaded files that contained personally identifiable information related to impacted clients, including 17 Maine residents, according to the filing. The identifying data included some combination of clients’ names, birth dates, Social Security numbers and account numbers.

Mariner Wealth Advisors investigated the incident “alongside third-party experts” and did not find evidence that client data was misused, according to the filing. Impacted clients were notified through a letter and offered 12 months of credit monitoring.

In April, Mariner Advisor Network, a segment of Mariner Wealth Advisors, was acquired by LPL Financial Holdings Inc. and Private Advisor Group LLC. The deal involved 367 financial advisers who collectively managed $31 billion in assets.

LPL suffered its own third-party data breach on November 10, 2025, which exposed personal data of 1,581 customers, according to a separate filing with the Maine Attorney General’s office. The company told affected clients in a letter that “malware distributed through phishing messages” affected a “limited number” of adviser devices. LPL implemented new security safeguards following the incident, according to the letter.

More than 1 million cybercrime incidents were reported nationwide last year, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report.
