Vanguard Unwraps Bond ETFs

Four bond exchange traded funds (ETF) from The Vanguard Group featuring expense ratios of 0.11% began trading Tuesday on the American Stock Exchange.

The new ETFs, which are structured as separate share classes of established, diversified bond index funds represent Vanguard’s first exchange-traded fixed income portfolios, according to a news release.

According to the announcement, the Vanguard Bond ETFs provide exposure to the broad U.S. bond market as represented by the Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index:

  • Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF/ Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index.
  • Vanguard Short-Term Bond ETF/ Lehman Brothers 1-5 Year Government.

The four bond ETFs are managed by the Vanguard Fixed Income Group, which oversees $310 billion in assets, including $65 billion in bond index fund assets.

iShares Gets New U.S. Sales Manager for RIA Team

Barclays Global Investors has appointed Sue Thompson, formerly of Vanguard, as the National Sales Manager of the Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) Team for its iShares business in the U.S.

Thompson will manage a team of 12 who focus on educating RIAs about how to utilize iShares Funds in their clients’ portfolios.

Thompson joins BGI after seven years at Vanguard, where she most recently headed the National Full Service Broker/Dealer Sales team for Vanguard’s Financial Advisor Services since 2005. She joined Vanguard in 1999 as Senior Counsel in the Legal Department, specializing in tax law and structured products.

Prior to her position at Vanguard, Thompson was an attorney at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP in California, specializing in public finance.
