This year, PLANADVISER followed up with advisers on the 2025 Top Retirement Plan Advisers listing to get to know them better. These are the responses from Matt Watson of Strategic Retirement Partners, in Charleston, South Carolina.

PLANADVISER: What does it take to be a successful retirement plan adviser in 2025?

Watson: Technical expertise is table stakes and no longer enough to be a great retirement plan adviser. Success in 2025 demands consistency, adaptability and an authentic understanding of client needs. After 25 years in the field, I’ve learned that being a responsive and reliable resource through changing markets and regulations builds lasting trust. Clients at Strategic Retirement Partners receive technical expertise, combined with the values of listening, preparing and being patient. These qualities remain essential for solving complex retirement decisions, even as the industry evolves.

PLANADVISER: Has the focus or character of your practice shifted meaningfully over time to respond to evolving client demands, market pressures or the emergence of new technologies?

Watson: Yes, our practice has evolved significantly. Early on, plan design was relatively static, and participant engagement was limited. Today, we incorporate behavioral finance, data analytics and digital tools to personalize retirement strategies. While technology has enhanced our capabilities, the core mission remains unchanged: helping people retire with confidence. The biggest shift has been in client expectations for immediacy and transparency, which we meet by combining high-touch service with modern solutions.

PLANADVISER: What are some of the most important growth strategies that have generated success for your firm? Where do you source new clients most effectively?

Watson: Our growth has been driven by relationship-building and community engagement. Rather than relying on aggressive marketing, we focus on being present, hosting educational events, supporting local businesses and maintaining strong referral networks. Trust and reputation carry weight. Most of our new clients come through referrals from satisfied plan sponsors and participants. This organic growth reflects our commitment to long-term partnerships over short-term gains.

PLANSPONSOR: What are the most challenging aspects of the job? What are the most enjoyable?

Watson: The most challenging aspect is addressing the emotional side of education and financial planning. Retirement decisions often involve uncertainty and personal reflection, requiring empathy and careful guidance. The most rewarding part is seeing clients reach their retirement goals. Whether it’s a teacher, a nurse or a small business owner, helping someone transition into retirement with confidence is a privilege. It’s those moments that remind me why I chose this profession.

PLANADVISER: For those plan sponsors looking for a new plan adviser, describe what makes your firm stand out.

Watson: Clients tell us that our firm stands out for its consistency, responsiveness and personalized approach. We prioritize clear communication and proactive service, ensuring clients feel supported at every stage. With 25 years of experience, we’ve developed a deep understanding of both regulatory requirements and human behavior. We don’t just manage retirement plans; we build relationships. Our clients know they can count on us for thoughtful guidance, not just technical answers. In a crowded field, we offer clarity and commitment.
