Who

The most successful retirement plan advisers
Reported by PLANADVISER Staff

There is nothing like tumultuous times to highlight the value of, and reinforce the need for, expert help for plan fiduciaries. It is also the kind of challenging environment that tends to separate the chaff from the wheat—that sorts out the committed from the merely intrigued—and, yes, it surely plays to the advantage of a profession dedicated to helping plan sponsors construct the right programs and participants make the best of them.

In 2005, we launched our Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year award: to acknowledge “the contributions of the nation’s best financial advisers in helping make retirement security a reality for workers across the nation.” In the pages that follow, it is our privilege to highlight the standouts from this year’s nominations in terms of “success,’ as measured by number of plans and dollar value of assets under advisement1.

The advisers and adviser practices listed on the following pages were drawn from nominations received for PLANSPONSOR’s annual awards for Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year and Retirement Plan Adviser Team of the year. The criteria that underlie the award are simple but significant: We want to recognize advisers who make a difference through increasing participation, boosting deferral rates, enhancing asset allocation, and/or providing better programs through expanded service or expense management.

This year, we received 332 nominations representing more than 200 advisers. Ten advisers received five or more nominations. We collected information from 216 advisers and, of those, 127 advisers (78 teams and 49 individuals) completed the entry form in its entirety, making them eligible for the award.

A little more than half (52.8%) of those completing the survey identified themselves as independent advisers, the rest affiliated with wirehouses, including a number of the nation’s largest and best-known. Significantly, more than two-thirds (68.3%) of those nominated say they offer their services as a fiduciary—including a number affiliated with those wirehouses that traditionally have resisted embracing ERISA’s fiduciary entanglements.

That the advisers nominated have enjoyed success is undeniable. Collectively, they represent $159.7 billion in assets under advisement and serve more than 3.5 million participants. Between September 2006 and September 2007, this group of advisers has added 1,274 plans, while only losing 102.

The majority of advisers nominated are not targeting huge plans, and many are building significant books of business out of mid-size plans. However, unlike last year, when most advisers and teams said they were specializing in the $2 million to $50 million market, this year, only 34.2% of advisers said that was their target market, while 42.3% of advisers said they are focused on the $10 million to $50 million space. The $50 million to $200 million market was the target for 14.8% of nominated advisers and, for 6.7%, it was the micro $500,000 to $2 million plans. Just 2% aim for plans with more than $200 million in assets.

More than half have clients using automatic enrollment and automatic deferral increases, while enrollment meetings and ongoing participant education are offered by about 95% of the nominees. Advisers are most likely to meet with participants semiannually as a group (31.3% of advisers), followed by quarterly group meetings (30.6%). About three-quarters of advisers and adviser teams offer individual investment advice, while 72.3% offer personal planning as well.

However, plan sponsors get much better attention, with 59.7% of advisers having quarterly meetings with the client to discuss investments (investment monitoring is offered by 94.9% of advisers). Almost all advisers (97.8%) say they help create an investment policy statement for the plan, while 56.2% create a communication policy statement to focus education efforts. Meetings to discuss the recordkeeper or plan design issues are most likely to occur annually.

Compensation has become a sensitive issue of late, and advisers—including many that have long been compensated based on plan asset values—have been repositioning their fees and services in response. Among this year’s nominees, the split in approach is evident: 120 have some plans paying fees based on assets; a nearly identical 113 are receiving commissions; and 99 advisers say that some clients pay them a fee based on service or projects.

Many advisers are branching out beyond just 401(k)s: Among this year’s nominations, there are 36 advisers or adviser teams with 10% or more of their business in defined benefit plans and 22 with the same contributions from nonqualified deferred compensation programs. Additionally, 403(b) plans make up a 10th of the practice for 13 advisers or teams, and nine advisers have that amount of their business coming from 457 plans.

The Process

Nominations for the Retirement Plan Adviser and Adviser Team of the Year awards were solicited online from retirement plan advisers, their employers and/or broker/dealers, and plan sponsors, as well as from working partners of these advisers, including investment vendors, accountants and attorneys, and pension administrators (advisers who have attained the PLANSPONSOR Retirement Professional designation receive an automatic nomination). Nominees must complete a form providing various details of their practice.

A list of semifinalists is compiled from a quantitative evaluation of their current service levels and, based on interviews with their plan sponsor clients, finalists are selected. Those finalists then are evaluated by an expert panel of judges, from which the winners are selected.

The winners will be announced at the annual PLANSPONSOR/PLANADVISER Awards Dinner on April 3, 2008, in New York. We will profile the Adviser of the Year and the Adviser Team of the Year in more detail in the April 2008 issue of PLANSPONSOR magazine and the March/April 2008 issue of PLANADVISER magazine.

Previous Winners

  • Chad Larsen of Moreton Financial Solutions in Denver, Colorado (2007)
  • Dorann Cafaro of The Cafaro Group in Little Silver, New Jersey (2006)
  • John Mott of Smith Barney in Houston, Texas (2005)
  • The inaugural PLANSPONSOR Retirement Plan Adviser Team of the Year was the STAR Group with Merrill Lynch in Akron, Ohio, in 2007.
