Douglas Prince believes in efficiencies. “Anything we touch more than once, we try to automate,” he notes, and the company has a process engineer and programmer on contract. The Prince Group was founded in 1998 and, now that the group has slowed from the rapid growth it saw at the beginning, the firm is focused on managed group and process efficiency.

The Prince Group has seven members: three senior team members (Prince, Brea Dantin, and Deana Harmon), an adviser with family clients, an administrative assistant, two para-professionals who have some direct client work, and a permanent intern.

Most of the team’s clients are within a two- to three-hour drive from the office in Indianapolis, Prince says. This allows for more face-to-face time, according to Dantin, which in turn leads to stronger relationships. Further, Prince says, it is the face-to-face time that generates conversations about what is happening at the company that leads to initiatives affecting plan design and communication.

“We are a fiduciary,” Prince explains. “We have to act in the best interest of participants. This is what the market demands and needs.” Even more, the company does not take any financial support from vendors. “We don’t let anyone buy us lunch or dinner….We’ve mailed back golf balls,” he says.
