  • More than one-quarter (26.6%) of plan sponsors do not know the average expense ratio of the investment options in their defined contribution (DC) plans, PLANSPONSOR’s 2013 Defined Contribution Survey found. This jumps to 38% among plans with less than $25 million in assets but falls to 13% among plans with more than $50 million.
  • Aging Advisers: More than four in 10 financial advisers (43%) are either at or within 10 years of the traditional retirement age of 65, according to Cerulli Associates. The average age of all financial advisers is 50.9.
  • Record Highs: The average 401(k) account balance managed by Fidelity Investments reached $89,300 by the end of the fourth quarter of 2013, a 15.5% increase from the year before. For participants who have both a 401(k) and an individual retirement account (IRA), the average balance was $161,400—up 16% from the previous year.
  • Top Heavy?: Out of 500,000 companies with a total of $3.5 trillion in assets in their 401(k) plans, the 5,000 largest—or 1%—control $2.5 trillion, or 72.5% of the assets, data from Judy Diamond Associates show.
