The Lockton Dallas group acts as an extension of the investment committee or benefits staff, David Altimont notes. “A lot of the skills of a trusted adviser are understanding what a client needs,” he explains.

The Lockton clients have an average plan size of $30 million to $40 million, although new business is trending larger. Most are 401(k) or defined contribution plans, though there are a handful of defined benefit plans in the mix.

All on the Lockton Dallas team have spent most of their careers in the retirement plan business.

Altimont initially worked in the recordkeeping arena and went to law school to better understand the legal aspects of the retirement plan space. After working for two large recordkeepers, he joined a small consulting firm for a short time before coming over to start Lockton Dallas with Lucas Barton about five years ago.

Barton grew up in the HR and retirement plan industry, he explains, with a father who was a plan sponsor. Although it sounded boring when he was a child, he notes, he went right into the retirement plan business when he left college—starting at a public commercial bank and Smith Barney, focusing on retirement plans.

Courtney Stroope and Erika Chavez are senior account executives: Stroope leads client-service efforts, while Chavez brings strong M&A and compliance expertise to the team. Kim Pacheco, an associate account executive who began as a summer intern while finishing her MBA, rounds out the group.
