MAI Capital Management LLC, a registered investment adviser and wealth management firm, announced Monday the hiring of Matt Barthel as managing partner, strategic adviser recruiting.
Barthel, who joined MAI on Monday, will report directly to Managing Partner Jim Kacic and will work on increasing the firm’s network of financial advisers, with a particular focus on adviser lift-outs, according to the announcement.
Barthel has nearly 35 years of experience in journalism and 20 years of experience in wealth-management data operations. In his previous role, Barthel was the lead editor for Barron’s Magazine’s financial adviser rankings. He also oversaw proprietary rankings, benchmarking research and editorial material for Barron’s Magazine and The Wall Street Journal.
“Matt is a ‘triple threat’ with deep ties to RIAs and wirehouse and sports-focused advisers,” said Rick Buoncore, MAI Capital Management’s chair and CEO, in a statement. “His expertise and relationships across the financial adviser landscape will play a major role in our efforts to expand our adviser network.”
Barthel’s earlier roles included creative lead at Digitas and editor of American Banker. He earned a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame.
“I’ve enjoyed watching MAI’s ascension as a fast-growing and respected RIA, and I’m excited for the opportunity to play a key role in driving that growth,” said Barthel in a statement.
In March, the Carlyle Group Inc., a global investment firm, acquired a majority stake in MAI at a valuation of more than $2.8 billion. Carlyle first invested in MAI (originally McCormack Advisors International) in 2021 through its investment in Galway Holdings, which had acquired MAI that year.
MAI had $73.8 billion in assets under management and $6.6 billion in assets under advisement as of June 30.
