  • Brian Cosmano

Vice President, Strategic Product Initiatives, Great-West Investments/Empower

Brian Cosmano is vice president, strategic product initiatives at Great-West Financial. He leads the development of new advisory service capabilities such as personalized target-date funds and innovative managed accounts solutions. Brian led the development of a new industry trend – the Dynamic Qualified Default Investment Alternative (QDIA). Since the Pension Protection Act of 2006 encouraged the use of target-date funds, adoption has exploded – but with little in the way of innovation. Brian’s work in the area started with behavioral research that showed participants are at a pivot point in mid-to-late career, where they begin to benefit from a more personalized approach to planning than a target-date can offer. The concept is now being adopted across the industry and has been recognized as a top trend of 2017. Brian is now expanding the concept of managed accounts by leading the creation of more fully integrated solutions that dramatically improve the participant experience, address broader financial wellness at all life stages, and focus on the process of asset decumulation and income protection. To support this effort he has written papers on allocating to guaranteed income products and roth vs pretax contributions which have been quoted in various publication including USA Today. Previously, Cosmano worked at Dimensional Fund Advisors, where he oversaw the creation of a personalized target income offering. Cosmano also managed the operations and technology team within Morningstar’s Investment Management group, which included the team responsible for the Ibbotson/Morningstar advisory services platform.
